On October 7, 2026, the Theology and Education Committee of Christian Associates of Southwest Pennsylvania released A Statement of Concern and Counsel on "Christian Nationalism." The committee—comprised of theologians and pastors from diverse Christian traditions—calls Christians to live as responsible, discerning, and patriotic citizens and to reject racism, violence, and sectarianism. Read the full statement here.
While noting the important roles of Christians and Christian ideas in America’s founding and subsequent history and encouraging church members to exercise their civic duties both under the guidance of their faith and in conversation with others, the statement rejects ideas contrary to the Gospel of Jesus Christ which have been broadly associated with “Christian nationalism.”
While the statement is not the official or authoritative teaching of any judicatory represented in Christian Associates, an appendix refers readers to the teaching documents or other statements of various church bodies on political life and faithful citizenship. In this way, they are urged to become familiar with their own particular church body's reflections on the relationship between citizenship and discipleship.
The Theology and Education Committee, a standing committee of Christian Associates, is made up of Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox theologians and pastors appointed by their judicatory heads.
